Brassica Planting Time
It is at this time of the year that we get our vege patches ready for planting that wonderful family of delicious and vital vegetables – the Brassicas. They include the mighty Broccoli, delicious Cabbage and Kale, and the under-rated and very misunderstood Brussel sprout. - Plant your Brassicas in a good quality, compost enriched soil, avoid using manure at planting and use a plant starter tonic to get the seedlings going and step up with some fertilizer in about 6 weeks time - Planting Nasturtiums nearby is a highly effective, organic and colorful way to keep aphids off your brassicas. Nasturtiums are terrific to eat also, they are a fabulous peppery addition to a garden salad. A fine net or tight chicken wire over your Brassicas in the early development days will help protect your brassicas from white cabbage moth, the caterpillar or instar of this white moth just adores Brassicas and will decimate them, be vigilant. This method is an easy way to control a pest with out using sprays on your vegetables..
